In a heartwarming tribute to baseball history, the Miami Marlins are set to immortalize two of their most iconic players in the 2026 Marlins Legends Hall of Fame. Josh Beckett and Dontrelle Willis, both integral parts of the Marlins' 2003 World Series victory, will be honored for their remarkable contributions to the team and the South Florida community. This announcement, made at FanFest on Saturday night, marks a significant moment in the Marlins' legacy.
The Marlins Legends Hall of Fame, established to recognize former players, coaches, managers, and staff who have made substantial impacts, previously inducted Jeff Conine, Luis Castillo, Jim Leyland, and Jack McKeon into its inaugural class in 2025. Josh Beckett, drafted second overall in the 1999 MLB Draft, transformed from a confident flamethrower into a World Series hero in 2003. Despite battling blisters throughout his early career with the Marlins (2001-05), Beckett's performance peaked in 2003. He posted a 9-8 record with a 3.04 ERA in 24 games (23 starts), but his true heroism shone in the postseason.
In a bold move by manager McKeon, Beckett pitched on just three days' rest in World Series Game 6 against the Yankees. This decision proved pivotal, as Beckett delivered a shutout, the only one to clinch a World Series since 1991. With just 107 pitches, he tagged out Jorge Posada for the final out, silencing the Yankee Stadium crowd. Beckett's performance in 2003 solidified his place in Marlins history, ranking him among the top 10 in various categories, including bWAR, ERA, wins, WHIP, K/9, strikeouts, shutouts, ERA+, and FIP.
Dontrelle Willis, acquired via a trade with the Cubs in March 2002, brought a unique flair to the Marlins. His quirky delivery and sideways cap captivated fans, and he quickly became a fan favorite. In 2003, Willis, then 21, made the National League All-Star team and was named NL Rookie of the Year, boasting a 14-6 record with a 3.30 ERA in 27 starts. Two years later, he achieved what is considered one of the best single-season pitching performances in Marlins history, leading the Majors in wins, complete games, and shutouts while finishing second in the NL Cy Young voting. Willis remains the only 20-game winner in the franchise's history.
Both Beckett and Willis spent five seasons with the Marlins (2003-07) and continue to dominate the pitching leaderboards. The Marlins will honor Beckett and Willis with pregame ceremonies during the 2026 season, and their plaques will be displayed in the Marlins Museum, located on the Legends Level (fifth floor) behind home plate.
