Tahlia McGrath is stepping into a new chapter, expressing her full support for Australia's revamped leadership structure as they prepare to face the recently crowned world champions, India, in a thrilling multi-format series this month.
Following the retirement of the iconic Alyssa Healy, McGrath will continue to serve as vice-captain. She'll be joined by Ashleigh Gardner, who will share the co-deputy role under the new captain, Sophie Molineux. This dynamic trio is set to lead the charge in their first major assignment: a three-match T20 International series against India, kicking off at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday. This series is more than just a warm-up; it's a crucial test for Australia's T20 prowess as they build towards a World Cup year.
McGrath, who was among the candidates interviewed for the captaincy, has openly backed Molineux for success. "I've been incredibly fortunate to captain my country on 15 occasions, and I've cherished every moment," McGrath shared. "Naturally, I expressed my interest for the full-time role. However, I'm genuinely thrilled for Soph and am fully committed to supporting her in any way I can. I'm also really looking forward to collaborating with Soph and Ash as we aim for further achievements and, hopefully, lift some more silverware for Australia in the near future."
She continued, "We've played some exceptional cricket, and with several major tournaments on the horizon, I'm confident Soph will do an outstanding job. My role is to be there for her, offering my complete support."
This upcoming T20I marks Australia's first international fixture since their ODI World Cup semi-final exit against India in October, and their first foray into the shortest format since last March. McGrath anticipates a significant challenge from Harmanpreet Kaur's squad, who have already arrived in Sydney and begun their preparations, including a tour match against the Governor-General's XI at North Sydney Oval on Friday night.
"Multi-format series are the ultimate test, requiring us to excel across all formats," McGrath explained. "India is a world-class team, coming off a sensational World Cup performance. For us, this is our first time together as a squad in a while, and it's our only home series this summer. We're all incredibly excited, and I'm expecting some truly high-calibre cricket."
But here's where it gets interesting... McGrath, who experienced a relatively quiet period with both bat and ball in 2025 for both Australia and in the WBBL, is drawing significant confidence from her recent domestic 50-over performances for South Australia. She showcased her form by scoring 58 and an unbeaten 43 in consecutive victories against Victoria last week, also contributing with 3 wickets for 48 runs. Earlier in January, she notched a valuable 47 against Western Australia.
"It was wonderful to return and play for South Australia, secure some wins, and contribute personally," McGrath stated. "It provided me with excellent preparation."
