Canada and France are opening consulates in Greenland's capital, Nuuk, as a symbolic gesture of support for Denmark and the Arctic region. This move comes in response to the US's previous attempts to gain control over the semi-autonomous Danish territory. The Canadian foreign minister, Anita Anand, is leading a delegation to the inauguration, including Canada's Indigenous governor general, Mary Simon. The French foreign ministry has appointed Jean-Noël Poirier as the consul general, marking the first time an EU country has established a consulate in Greenland. The consulates aim to enhance cooperation on climate change and Inuit rights, as well as strengthen political ties with local authorities. The Canadian consulate was initially planned to open in 2024, but the inauguration was postponed due to bad weather. The French decision was made during President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Greenland in June. Despite President Donald Trump's initial threats of tariffs against Denmark and other European countries that opposed a US takeover of Greenland, these plans were abandoned after a deal was reportedly reached with NATO's secretary general. Technical talks are currently underway between the US, Denmark, and Greenland to secure an Arctic security agreement. The Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers had already agreed to form a working group before Trump's tariff threats, indicating a pre-existing commitment to cooperation in the region.
