Tarrant's mental health, he said, was deteriorating, and he experienced 'wildly fluctuating beliefs and identity'. He argued that going to trial under those conditions would have been 'a nightmare'. Tarrant's testimony revealed his concerns about his mental health and his belief that he had no choice but to plead guilty to avoid a trial. He suggested that his decision was influenced by the harsh prison conditions, rather than a rational choice. Tarrant's legal team has also called a witness, an Australian clinical psychologist, who reported a possible 'deterioration in Mr. Tarrant's mental health'. The psychologist concluded that Tarrant's emotional well-being, judgment, and ability to make informed choices were impacted at the time of his guilty pleas.
