A Heartwarming Sundance Story: Love and Bears in the Spotlight

While most filmmakers aim for distribution deals or awards at Sundance, the directors of the feature documentary "Nuisance Bear" are leaving with something equally special - a marriage license!
In a heartwarming twist, Jack Weisman proposed to his fellow filmmaker, Gabriela Osio Vanden, right on Main Street in Park City. The surprise engagement took place in front of the Egyptian Theatre, leaving festival-goers in awe.
But here's where it gets even more extraordinary. The couple's journey took an unexpected turn when their friend and executive producer, Alex Pritz, revealed a hidden talent - he was ordained to perform marriage ceremonies! With the power vested in him, Pritz conducted the rites inside the Egyptian, making it a truly unique and memorable experience.
The ceremony, though chilly, was a far cry from the frigid temperatures of Churchill, Manitoba, where Weisman and Osio Vanden shot their documentary. Affectionately known as the "Polar Bear Capital of the World," Churchill has become a haven for those seeking a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.
"Nuisance Bear," which evolved from a short film directed by the couple, is now premiering in the U.S. Documentary Competition. The film offers a unique perspective, immersing viewers in the lives of polar bears navigating a world of tourism, surveillance, and climate change.
As the synopsis beautifully puts it, "For thousands of years, polar bears have migrated along the shores of Hudson Bay. Today, their ancient rhythm clashes with a human world. Nuisance Bear showcases a polar bear's struggle, forced to confront tourists, wildlife officers, and hunters as climate change disrupts their natural habitat. When a sacred predator is labeled a 'nuisance,' it raises questions about who truly belongs in this shared landscape."
The film's narrative continues, "Osio Vanden and Weisman's feature expands on their award-winning short, guided by an Inuit narrator who offers a nuanced perspective. Shot with striking intimacy, the film observes bears constantly monitored and photographed. By exploring this uneasy coexistence, Nuisance Bear becomes a thought-provoking meditation on how humans manage and redefine wildlife, challenging the conventions of nature documentaries."
Deadline had the pleasure of interviewing the filmmakers three years ago when their short film was in the Oscar race. Weisman shared his insight, "Churchill has seen many films, but we realized a missing component in the stories. We wanted to offer a unique approach."
Osio Vanden and Weisman's portrayal of polar bears contrasts with the usual media narrative. Weisman observed, "Polar bears are often dramatized as monsters in the media. There's an exaggeration due to mauling stories, but it's important to understand the context."
The feature-length version of "Nuisance Bear" is produced by a talented team, including Michael Code, Will N. Miller, and Teddy Leifer. The film's executive producers are a diverse group, with Alex Pritz doubling as the wedding officiant. The cinematography, a collaborative effort, is by Osio Vanden, Weisman, Michael Code, Sam Holling, Ian Kerr, and Jack Gawthrop. The film's score was composed by Emmy-winning Cristóbal Tapia de Veer.
