A Dark Moment for Google Smart Home Gadgets: Widespread Outage Affecting Devices
It’s a frustrating reality for many smart home enthusiasts: Google is currently grappling with significant issues that have rendered various smart home devices seemingly offline in the Google Home app, irrespective of their actual operational status. The tech giant is actively seeking a resolution, but as of now, there’s no timeline provided for when normal service will be restored.
Reports from Android Authority indicate that numerous Reddit users have taken to forums over the last couple of days to voice their dissatisfaction. These users are experiencing problems with a wide array of smart home gadgets, including light switches, plugs, power modules, light bulbs, and air purifiers. Interestingly, despite these devices appearing offline in the app, they continue to respond to voice commands through the Gemini interface, suggesting that the issue lies specifically within the Google Home application itself. Fortunately, many users have noted that their security cameras, smart speakers, and displays remain fully functional.
A representative from Google acknowledged the situation on the Google Home subreddit, stating, "We are aware of an issue causing some devices to show offline in the Google Home app. We are working to resolve this ASAP and will circle back when the fix rolls out."

Data from Downdetector indicates that around 10 a.m. yesterday, there was a noticeable spike in connectivity problems associated with Gemini, which then stabilized before picking up again this morning.
In the community, several users have proposed potential workarounds, such as connecting to a VPN, re-linking Google Home, or removing and then re-adding the malfunctioning devices to the Google Home app.
There’s speculation that the recent transition from Google Assistant to the new Gemini platform may be contributing to these disruptions, although Google has yet to confirm this theory. Some users claim that similar issues have emerged sporadically over the past few months.
Google’s relationship with its smart home user base has become strained recently. The decision to discontinue support for older-generation Nest thermostats sparked considerable backlash, prompting some users to initiate a community project aimed at restoring functionality to these now-obsolete devices.
