Remembering Gaylord Rieta: A Legacy of Entertainment and Martial Arts
Honolulu, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Gaylord Rieta, a beloved entertainer and martial arts sensei, leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of those he touched. His life was a testament to the power of passion and dedication, as he seamlessly blended his love for music and martial arts, captivating audiences and inspiring students.
Rieta's journey began in the vibrant Waikiki entertainment scene, where his soulful voice and guitar playing enchanted Karen Roeller. "As soon as I heard that voice and saw him playing guitar, I knew he was destined for greatness. We shared a love for the music of the 50s and 60s, and I felt an instant connection," Roeller recalled.
His brother, Vernon Rieta, added, "Gaylord had a deep connection to his Hawaiian roots, and his music reflected that. He was a true local from Hawaii, and his performances resonated with people's hearts."
Rieta's expertise in martial arts was equally impressive. He learned lion dancing and became a regular performer during the Chinese New Year's Parade, captivating crowds with his energetic and graceful moves. His ability to connect with fans through music and martial arts showcased his versatility and talent.
However, Rieta's health led him to leave the Waikiki music scene and find a new audience at the Aloha Stadium swap meet. He embraced this new challenge, setting up a stall, sound system, and performing every weekend for 16 years. He sold CDs, cassettes, and booked gigs, turning his passion into a profession.
"Gaylord's idea was to make music his career, and he did just that," Vernon shared. "He was an entertainer at heart, and his dedication to his craft was remarkable."
Despite his passing in November 2025, after a long illness, Gaylord Rieta's legacy continues to inspire. His friends and family remember the laughter and joy he brought into their lives, even in the midst of tears. Rita Yoshitomi, his longtime girlfriend, reflected, "I will always cherish the fun we had together and with everyone else. Gaylord's presence brought happiness and laughter wherever he went."
Roeller added, "Gaylord's impact on our lives was immeasurable. We laughed, we enjoyed every moment, and his kindness and care will forever be etched in our memories."
Vernon shared a poignant memory, "I always remember Gaylord's concern for others' well-being. He would ask about our meals, but it was his genuine interest in our health that truly touched me."
Services for Gaylord Rieta will be held on Saturday, February 7th. A visitation will commence at 9:30 a.m. at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Chapel, followed by a celebration of life at 10:30 a.m. His passing marks the end of an era, but his spirit and influence will forever live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
