Get ready, movie buffs! The writing duo behind the animated sensation 'KPop Demon Hunters' is joining forces with the one and only Tim Burton for a remake of the classic 'Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman.' This news is generating a lot of buzz, and for good reason!
Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the talented screenwriters behind 'KPop Demon Hunters,' are taking on this exciting new project. Warner Bros. Pictures has enlisted them to pen the script for Burton's reimagining of the iconic 1958 sci-fi horror film. Burton himself is set to direct, adding his signature gothic touch to the story.
But here's where it gets interesting: the original film tells the tale of a wealthy heiress who, after an encounter with extraterrestrials, grows to an enormous size and seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband. Burton, known for his unique visual style in films like 'Beetlejuice' and 'The Nightmare Before Christmas,' will also produce the film alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Gillian Flynn, the writer of 'Gone Girl', had previously worked on an earlier version of the script.
Adding to the excitement, LuckyChap, the production company led by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, is also involved in the production and development. Morgan Begg, the company’s director of development, is overseeing the project, with Kai Dolbashian serving as executive producer.
Jimenez and McMechan were recognized as two of Variety’s 10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2025. Their success with 'KPop Demon Hunters,' a joint venture between Sony Animation and Netflix, has catapulted them into the spotlight. The screenwriting duo met at Loyola Marymount University, and their collaboration has already yielded impressive results.
"We started writing that in 2020 during the pandemic," Jimenez shared with Variety. "At first, we were like, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie ever, and then as time passed, we were like, ‘Maybe it won’t get made. Who knows?’ And then we were on set this summer and the trailer dropped and we were shocked. You don’t really expect anything from this career. You’re just grateful to get paid and if something happens with it, that’s great.”
McMechan added, "This was truly the first time where there was all this manpower behind it, and it felt like it was on track to being made.”
And this is the part most people miss: 'KPop Demon Hunters' has become a global phenomenon since its release last summer, becoming Netflix’s most-watched film of all time. The film's songs also made waves, breaking records on the Billboard 200. It's nominated for three awards at this year’s Golden Globes, including Best Animated Motion Picture, Best Original Song, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
