A week after a powerful magnitude-7.5 earthquake jolted the eastern coast of Aomori Prefecture, Japan, seismologists are urging continued vigilance. This isn't just a matter of caution; it's about being prepared for what might come next.
On December 8th, a significant temblor struck, registering an intensity of upper 6 on the Japanese seismic scale (which ranges from 0 to 7) in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. This triggered tsunami warnings and advisories for several coastal areas in Hokkaido and the Tohoku region. And as if that wasn't enough, seismic activity continued, including a magnitude-6.9 earthquake that struck just days later.
Since that initial quake, as of Monday morning, there have been over 40 aftershocks with an intensity of 1 or higher. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a "Subsequent Earthquake Advisory" for 182 municipalities across Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Chiba prefectures.
But here's where it gets controversial... The agency highlights the heightened risk of future mega-quakes along the Japan Trench and the Chishima Trench in the northern Pacific. This advisory isn't just a suggestion; it's a call to action. Residents are strongly advised to prepare emergency bags, ensuring they can evacuate swiftly if necessary.
Given the potential for hazardous winter road conditions, which could hinder evacuations, the advisory also emphasizes the importance of reviewing evacuation routes and locations, securing furniture, stocking up on essential food and water supplies, and ensuring an adequate supply of necessary medications.
The current advisory is scheduled to be lifted at the end of Monday. However, the agency is quick to point out that this doesn't eliminate the possibility of another strong earthquake. Professor Toda Shinji from Tohoku University warns that another quake is more likely to occur east of the initial epicenter. He also notes that a major earthquake could strike within a month or even a year following a significant tremor, even though the probability decreases over time.
